OpenAI Gives ChatGPT’s Memory Feature

ChatGPT's Memory

Now, ChatGPT can remember what you like from one chat to another. With Custom Instructions, ChatGPT can give you answers that suit you best. This new ChatGPT’s Memory starts with Plus users in a trial version. You can use the controls to directly instruct ChatGPT to remember specific things, check what it recalls, or turn off its memory completely.

On Tuesday, a San Francisco company specializing in artificial intelligence announced that it’s rolling out an upgraded version of its chatbot. This new version will remember what users tell it to use that information in future conversations.

For instance, if you mention your daughter, Lina, who’s about to turn 5 and loves pink and jellyfish, the chatbot will remember. So, when you ask for a birthday card for Lina, it might create one with a pink jellyfish that says, “Happy 5th Birthday, Lina!”

According to a blog post by OpenAI

We’re testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful. You’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory.

Details Of ChatGPT’s Memory Feature

This upgrade aims to make ChatGPT more like other digital assistants you might be familiar with, such as Siri or Alexa. Last year, you could already give the chatbot instructions and personal preferences. Now, with this memory feature, ChatGPT can be even more helpful.

  • Although this new feature is currently available to a limited number of users, free and paid subscribers can access it.
  • OpenAI also introduces temporary chats where conversations and memories aren’t stored permanently.
  • The chatbot automatically remembers useful information from your conversations, but you can also control what it remembers, view stored info, delete certain details, or turn off memory altogether.
  • OpenAI takes privacy seriously and removes any personally identifiable information from conversations used to train its technology.
  • Concerns about storing personal memories persist, with the company likening it to how search engines and browsers handle internet history.

How Does ChatGPT’s Memory Feature Work?

When you chat with ChatGPT, you can ask it to remember something specific or let it pick up details independently. The more you use ChatGPT, the better its memory becomes, and you’ll see improvements over time. Here are some ChatGPT use cases of this feature:

  • If you tell ChatGPT that you like meeting notes with bolded headlines and information in bullet points, it will remember and summarize meetings in that style.
  • Let the bot know that your child enjoys sea otters and the color purple, and it might create a purple birthday card with a sea otter illustration when you ask it to make a card.
  • This feature is also beneficial for businesses. ChatGPT can remember your tone, voice, and format preferences, enhancing efficiency. Memories in the ChatGPT “workspace” are kept separate and are not used to train AI models, ensuring privacy.
  • Customized chatbots, known as GPTs, also benefit from this memory feature. For example, Book GPT, which suggests your next book, will remember your preferences, such as favorite genres, and provide tailored recommendations based on that information. You can also learn how to write an eBook with ChatGPT
  • As a kindergarten teacher with 25 students, you prefer lessons lasting 50 minutes with follow-up activities. ChatGPT remembers this preference when assisting you with lesson planning.

Will GPTs Possess Memory Capabilities?

GPTs, like ChatGPT, will also possess memory capabilities. Each GPT will have its separate memory, allowing builders to choose whether to enable this feature for their specific GPT. Just as with your chats, memories within GPTs will remain private and won’t be accessible to builders. To interact with a memory-enabled GPT, you must also activate memory.

For instance, consider the Books GPT, designed to assist you in discovering your next read. With memory activated, this GPT will recall your preferences, such as favorite genres or top book choices, and provide tailored recommendations, eliminating the need for repeated inputs.

However, it’s important to note that each GPT operates with its memory system. Therefore, if you’re utilizing a different GPT, such as the Artful Greeting Card GPT, to craft a birthday card for your daughter, it won’t automatically know her age or her fondness for jellyfish. You’ll need to provide these pertinent details again.

The option for memory in GPTs will become available as OpenAI introduces it more widely.

Final Verdict

Certainly, the ChatGPT’s Memory Feature raises fresh worries about privacy and safety, particularly regarding how it will retain sensitive or personal information.

The company recognizes this concern and assures users that it is “taking actions to evaluate and minimize biases and guide ChatGPT away from automatically storing sensitive information, such as your health details unless you specifically instruct it to do so.”
